Instructional Scaffolds

Instructional scaffolds are features that are included in all of our products that can be turned on and off at the student level. Each product has a default scaffold but you will have the ability to change if needed at the student level.
       
Intervention Scaffolds:  These scaffolds are best used for students who are struggling readers and students who may have trouble following steps in a routine.  The scaffolds for these students include:
  • The same 11 reading levels of each lesson plus a 12th level of scaffolding for students who score a 150L or below on LevelSet.
  • Numbering of the steps of the 5-Step Literacy Routine to help keep students on task and productive.
  • A Vocabulary and Concept Preview to provide pre-reading exposure to vocabulary and concepts which provide extra vocabulary and background building.
  • Additional time allowed for answering Step 3 Activity questions.
  • A Thought Question Sentence Starter to those students in the 4 lowest versions of the lesson.
Language Scaffolds: These tools support  any approach to second language acquisition while helping students learn content-area concepts, vocabulary, and metacognitive strategies. They are flexible and can be implemented in a number of ways to support a variety of second language acquisition programs.  Options include immersion into full English, English with native language supports, immersion into full Spanish, and dual-language.  The scaffolds for these students include:
  • The same 11 reading levels of each lesson plus a 12th level of scaffolding for students who score a 150L or below on LevelSet.
  • A Vocabulary and Concept Preview to provide pre-reading exposure to vocabulary and concepts which provide extra vocabulary and background building.
  • Additional time allowed for answering Step 3 Activity questions.
  • A Thought Question Sentence Starter to those students in the 4 lowest versions of the lesson
NOTE: Be sure to select the appropriate language in the Language column so that the appropriate content is displayed for the student.  Enrichment and Intervention scaffolds can also be layered with the Language scaffolds. Simply choose the options needed for each student.  

Enrichment Scaffolds:  Designed for advanced readers these tools support advanced learners with differentiated materials and extension opportunities to broaden content-area concepts and vocabulary beyond the 5-Step Literacy Routine for extended learning and college preparation.  The scaffolds for these students include:
  • Advanced grade-appropriate material that meets the needs of high-ability learners and promotes higher-order thinking skills.
  • Related links to other Internet content to extend and deepen lessons, and extension readings and activities to provide extra trivia and fun facts in science, social studies, and other subject areas.
